Bowery Artist Tribute
2008 - 2016
The Bowery Artist Tribute (BAT) celebrates and explores the histories of artists who have lived and worked on the Bowery and in the surrounding area. Conceived when the New Museum moved to the Bowery in 2007, BAT serves as a record of the rich artistic legacy of the neighborhood. This ongoing research project offers a connecting point for New Museum visitors to discover the area’s history, its artists, and the works of art that were created there.

BAT consists of online resources, publications, and public programming. A dedicated website, launched in 2008 and archived in 2016, featured an interactive map that plotted the locations of artists’ studios along a virtual stretch of the Bowery. The map was elaborated with multimedia documentation by artists or their relatives that provided a window into their lives and work. These resources are accessible via the Digital Archive links below and are updated periodically.

Bowery Artist Tribute was organized by Ethan Swan, Education Associate, as an initiative of the New Museum’s Education and Public Engagement Department and is now overseen by Shaun Leonardo, School, Youth, and Community Programs Manager, with the assistance of Janeen Schiff, Archivist.
